Two days after being awarded the Ballon d'Or, Cristiano Ronaldo recieved another present as an awful error by Osasuna goalkeeper Andres Fernandez presented him with his 30th goal of the season.
Ronaldo took a free-kick 10 yards from the edge of the area and struck it cleanly over the ducking Pepe but it was the perfect height for Fernandez to catch.
Instead he chose to punch and after top-edging the ball saw it bounce down and squirm beneath his legs, going in off his backside.
Routine victory: Real Madrid eased into the last eight of the Copa del Rey with a convincing victory at Osasuna
It was Ronaldo's first Real goal from a direct free-kick in the Copa del Rey having scored 14 in the league and six in the Champions League. It also ended the tie as a contest, making it 1-0 on the night but 3-0 on aggregate.
Manchester United target Fabio Coentrao played his first football for 57 days but he did not last the 90 minutes after being sent off in the second half for a wild challenge that earned him his second yellow card. Even before the booking it was not the type of performance that will have United stepping up attempts to sign him.
The 26-year-old is not cup-tied for the Champions League but has played just 282 minutes so far this season. He did not play like someone who might transform United's season and the show of indiscipline at the end will cost him a chance to play in the first leg of the quarter-final against Espanyol.
Osasuna had three good chances before the end of the first half when Miguel de las Cuevas, Alvaro Cejudo and Roberto Torres all went close. Casillas saved twice and Cejudo's chance came back off the post, though the tie was already beyond them after Ronaldo's strike.
The Copa del Rey draw has already been made to the semi-final stage so if Real beat Espanyol in the next round they will face Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao in the semi-final, with Barcelona in the other half of the draw.

Real cemented their passage into the last eight with a second goal after the break.
The two players competing with Gareth Bale for a place in the starting XI combined brilliantly to seal victory. Jese sprinted from the halfway line after being fed by Xabi Alonso and his cross was buried by Angel Di Maria.
Bale then got his chance on the hour when he replaced Ronaldo but there were few opportunities for the former Tottenham star as the game became more and more disjointed and Coentrao took centre stage with his sending off six minutes from time.
'He was unlucky,' said Carlo Ancelotti. 'I thought he played very well defensively and going forward before the red card. He has been out a long time.'
