iPhone users are disappointed with the iOS 7.1 software update
With every new I-phone software update comes the potential for problems and the iOS 7.1 released on Monday is no exception.
Customer's say it's killing their phone batteries among other pesky glitches.
The iOS7.1 is the first major update to Apple's newest operating systems for iPhones and iPads and the apple community is lamenting poor battery charges, disappearing contacts, bad Bluetooth connections, keyboards oriented the wrong way, and the list goes on, reports the Huffington Post.
According to zdnet.com, the iOS 7.1 is already on 21 per cent of all iPhones and iPads making it one of the fastest changeovers to a new operating system in recent history.
Despite rigorous internal testing and five beta versions offered to Apple developers, the battery seems to drop much faster than it did on the iOS7.
A twitter page dedicated to problems with the iOS7.1 has a collection of comments on the faults with the new update.
'iPhone has been unplugged 30 mins and already down to 92% battery' tweeted @Robbie Kimpton.
'I think I'd have to get that juice pack that gives me double battery life,' tweeted Timothy Tung Nguyen.
Users also took to Apple's discussion forum to voice their issues with the supposedly newer and better program.
I've had my phone for 3 months, never have dropped it once or anything of the sort, if that matters. My battery drains to 50% within an hour or so after intense use on the lowest level of brightness, and I seem to lose about 5-7 percents when on standby for 5 hours or so,' said rainxwater.
'My iphone 5s battery also drains fast after ios 7.1 update. Before the update I get 24hrs moderate to heavy use. But now I only get 12 hours'.
My iPhone 5S has been draining like crazy since the iOS 7.1 Update. This morning I woke up at 8:30, my phone was at 100%. It's now 10:40 and my phone is at 85%,' said Mattyboy.

This is the first sneakers you can print at home - and in any colour you want.
Inspired by the hit film Back to the Future, the blocky, futuristic footwear can be printed on any 3D printer.
The firm behind it has even made the plans available for free to show off the fabric 'ink' it has created.
The sneakers were created by the printer firm Recreus to show off their new 'fabric' ink.
Called filaflex, the 1.75mm thread is used by the 3D printer to create clothing.
'During months we have investigated and work hard to develop the 1.75mm filaflex format,' the Spanish firm said.
'Sneakerbots are the actual proof that shows filaflex works becoming in the most elastic filament on the market.

The firm says the shoes can be printed on any home printer, and were inspired by 1980s films.
'The sneakerbots by Ignacio Garcia are inspired by 80s films such as back to the future, Star Wars, Short Circuit etc,' it said.

The Future Of Samsung Galaxy- Turing Fingers Into Keybood With The Aid Of Galaxy Glass
Samsung plans for the future of Galaxy world of wearables - with its first step in creating Gear range of smartwatches -
and presently rumours suggest it’s gearing up to launch a Google Glass rival in
the autumn.
These reports were bolstered this week by a Samsung patent that not only hints at an upcoming wearable device – it details a system in which wearers could turn their hands into the keyboard.
"It relates to 'an input apparatus and method for providing a camera-assisted input operation for use in a portable device.'
‘Recently there is much interest in the wearable computers such as glasses-type terminal and wristwatch terminals,’ continued the patent.
‘Such wearable computers are even more limited in space for mounting an input means such as button type keypad and touchscreen.'
The system involves a camera for capturing an image, a storage unit that stores the ‘key to hand mapping table’, a display and a control unit.
Numbers could be assigned to a forefinger, for example, while symbols could be assigned to the middle finger. Alternatively, letters could be plotted at various points across the fingers and palm from top to bottom.
In the proposed system, people wearing the camera - on a Google Glass-style device dubbed Galaxy Glass - would be able to look down at their hands, which would be mapped using a virtual keyboard.
For example, numbers could be assigned to a forefinger, while symbols could be assigned to a middle finger.
Alternatively, letters could be plotted at various points across the fingers and palm from top to bottom.

Unbelievable: Apple can track you even when your iphone battery is died
Apple iPhone 5S users take note – even when your phone battery dies, the handset can still track your every move.
This is because when a battery dies, the phone keeps a small amount of power in reserve, meaning its low-energy chip can carry on collecting data from built-in motion sensors.
It can’t track location, however, but it can reveal how many steps a user takes, or establish whether a phone was still being carried around when used with select, third-party apps.
HOW DOES THE IPHONE 5S TRACK MOVEMENT?
When Apple launched the iPhone 5S, it added what’s called a ‘companion’ chip, dubbed M7.
The M7 collects data from sensors including the accelerometer, gyroscope and compasses.
These sensors can detect motion and are used by a variety of apps including fitness trackers, and maps.
It was designed to take this data collection task from the central processing unit (CPU) to help preserve battery and speed up the processors.
Each of the motion sensors are classed as ‘low-energy’, which means the M7 can continue to collect data from them using the battery reserve.
The M7 does not collect data from the GPS unit, though, because this unit takes up a lot of power and is handled by a separate chip.
All the data the M7 collects is encrypted and removed after seven days.
It also can't be accessed by Apple's built-in apps - only by apps developed by third parties.
The feature was discovered by Reddit user Glarznak while travelling abroad.
After four days without charge, Glarznak found that when he turned his iPhone back on, the number of steps he had taken during those four days had been recorded on a pedometer app he had installed.

Jonathan decorates Obasanjo, Buhari, IBB, others with centenary awards
President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday decorated
seven living former Nigerian Heads of State and
Presidents with the centenary awards.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
the centenary anniversary awards night and dinner,
during which 100 recipients were decorated, was
held at the banquet hall of the Presidential Villa.
The decorated leaders are Yakubu Gowon, Chief
Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Shehu Shagari and Gen.
Muhammadu Buhari.
Others are Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, Chief Ernest
Shonekan and Gen. Abdusalami Abubakar.
NAN reports that six late Nigerian Heads of State
were honoured post-humously.
The recipients of the post-humous award are Dr
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, Gen. Aguiyi
Ironsi, Gen. Murtala Mohammed, Gen. Sani Abacha
and Alhaji Musa Yar’Adua.
Also in the category is the presumed winner of the
June 1993 general election, late Chief Moshood
Abiola.
NAN reports that the President decorated the
representatives of the late leaders among whom is
Mrs Maryam Abacha.
NAN also reports that the centenary awards are in
13 categories with winners both living and dead.
The first are those who have contributed to the
making of Nigeria and they include Queen Elizabeth
II of England, Lord Fredrick Lugard and his wife,
Lady Lugard,
The second category is the Heroes of the Struggle
for independence/Pioneer political leaders which
include Azikiwe, Balewa, Macaulay and Chief
Obafemi Awolowo.
Others in the category are Sir Ahmadu Bello, Prof
Eyo Ita, Jaja Nwachukwu, Pa Michael Imoudu, Chief
Anthony Enahoro and Chief Joseph Tarka.
The rest are Malam Aminu Kano, Mrs Margaret
Ekpo, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Hajia Gambo
Sawaba.
The third category is the Pioneers in professional
Callings/careers which include the first indigenous

Coke reveals its secret: It may need to carry a cancer warning

Nightmares about the backlash they suffered the last time they dared to change the secret recipe for their drink still most likely haunt Coca-Cola executives.
But 27 years after the ill-fated launch of New Coke, the threat of having a cancer warning placed on their famous red bottles is forcing them to revise the closely guarded ingredients again.
With its arch rival Pepsi, Coca-Cola is altering its drink in the US after the state of California declared one of its flavourings a carcinogen – though it will continue to sell the old form of the drink in Britain and the rest of Europe, with no cautionary labelling.
The two drinks have been made to include less of the chemical 4-methylimidazole, a caramel flavouring known as 4-MEI, which the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the US has linked it to cancer in mice and leukaemia in rats. It can be formed during the process of cooking certain ingredients and consequently may be found in minor amounts in many foods. Under Californian law, drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens must have a cancer-warning label on their packaging.
But the two companies – which, combined, make up 90 per cent of the soft-drink market in the US – insist the ingredient is not a health risk.
Coca-Cola said yesterday the cancer warning is: “scientifically unfounded”, while also maintaining that the company has been able to make the changes through a “manufacturing process modification” rather than a full change of formula.
“The caramel colour in all of our products has been, is and always will be safe,” a spokesperson said.
“The changes will not affect the colour or taste of Coca-Cola. Over
the years, we have updated our manufacturing processes from time to
time, but never altered our secret formula. Caramel is a perfectly safe
ingredient and this has been recognised by all European food-safety
authorities.
“The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reaffirmed the safety of caramel colouring as recently as March 2011 and stated that the presence of 4-MEI in caramel colouring is not a health concern. In fact, 4-MEI is found in many foods including baked goods, coffee, bread, molasses, soy sauce, gravies and some beers.”
The American Beverage Association, the drinks industry’s trade body in the US, also said that there is no evidence that the ingredient poses a risk to humans. And the US Food and Drug Administration said someone would have to drink 1,000 cans of Pepsi or Coke per day to ingest the same dosage of the chemical given to the laboratory mice.
The secret recipe: ‘Merchandise 7X’
Is a great deal of self-propagated myth surrounding the Coca-Cola recipe and its “Merchandise 7X” combination of flavourings, which is apparently privy to just two executives who are not allowed to fly in the same plane in case the secret goes down with them. Last year an American radio presenter tracked down a 1979 article in an Atlanta newspaper which revealed nutmeg, neroli and even coriander were ingredients.
The original recipe from 1886 has been changed several times. Cocaine was replaced by caffeine in 1904. But the most controversial change was in 1985, when the company introduced New Coke with a sweeter taste. The product bombed, lasting just three months before the original was reinstated

Samsung does maintain the clockspeed advantage with a rare Snapdragon 800 chipset and while the fingerprint scanner was no surprise, the heart rate monitor certainly is.

Flatpack house built by a brave dad
Like most British men, the sight of a screwdriver and something to assemble from a flatpack sends me into a competitive tailspin.
While my chest puffs with machismo, my head is filled with doubts about my abilities.
So when I heard that a British company has begun selling a flat-pack mini-house, which is said to be as easy to assemble as an Ikea bookcase, I couldn’t resist the challenge.
At £6,500, they don’t come cheap, but the company which produces the wooden cabins — tinyhouseuk.co.uk — says that homeowners have been snapping them up.
Mark Burton, the company’s founder, says the traditional wooden buildings are being bought by people desperate to acquire more space without moving house. Indeed, it seems there’s a growing market for ingenious ways to expand your home — without inflicting fatal damage on your wallet.
Many of these involve creating separate, fully furnished buildings that include everything from sinks to beds, and are big enough to provide accommodation for a teenager or two, but small enough to fit in a garden without the need for planning permission.
Late last year, a British engineer unveiled the QB2, a £10,000 mini-house that boasts living space for two. Then there’s the Hivehaus, a series of hexagonal modules that can be slotted together depending on how much living space is required.
With three daughters aged four, eight and 11, space in my family’s Kent home is certainly at a premium.
As we live in a traditional farm cottage, I eschew the modern mini-houses, and plump for a classic wooden design — setting myself the challenge of whipping up a mini-home in just seven days.
SUNDAY
As the footballer Roy Keane famously once said: ‘Fail to prepare, prepare to fail.’ He may have been talking about qualifying for the World Cup, but I like to think the no-nonsense Irishman would adopt a similar attitude if he had just been asked to prepare a 15ft x 8ft base for his new house.
For me, this involves levelling part of our front garden by digging up the turf and then hiding the huge pile of earth behind a shrubbery in the hope that my wife, Charlotte, can’t see the damage I’ve caused.
I’m rumbled almost immediately and decide that now is probably not the ideal time to discuss my thinking about what we should do with any ‘waste water’ from the sink which will be fitted in the finished cabin.
MONDAY
My excitement at the arrival of my tiny house is tempered by the fact that this morning the perfectly flat base of my house — plywood screwed down on to a rectangle of timber, which I laid yesterday after moving the turf — now has clearly discernible undulations.
It may have something to do with the fact it rained non-stop all night. This means I can’t do any more work on it today.
Shortly after midday, the main structure for the house arrives in the back of a lorry and I unload 16, 6ft-tall wall panels and about 200 individual pieces of wood. Bedtime reading is seven sides of hand-written instructions, courtesy of Mark Burton.
He’s also thrown in a hand-made scale model showing what the finished cabin (don’t call it a shed!) should look like.
Confidence builds and I start imagining my daughters having sleepovers in it, proudly boasting to their friends that their dad built it.
Tuesday
The good news is that it’s stopped raining, so building work can theoretically begin again. The bad news is that the water on the base has now frozen, creating an ice-rink — much to the delight of my daughters.
Once they are packed off to school, I don thick gloves — not to mention my coat and scarf — and start trying to lug the wooden panels which make up the house walls into a vertical position.

The wooden framework has an MDF board pre-fixed on what will be the inside wall. This means that once the panels are in position, the interior will be ready to paint.
Each panel is numbered, allowing me to butt the appropriate ones next to each other and then screw them down — first into the base and then into one another.
By lunchtime, I have completed the rectangle of walls without any major difficulty. Structurally, my little house is already remarkably strong given that it is held together only by a handful of screws.
The next step is to add the pointy gables onto either end of the house and to connect them by the ridge beam — a long strip of wood which runs the length of the roof.
Because the ridge stands less than four metres tall, most local authorities would not require such a structure to have planning permission.
This is just as well, as I’ve already noticed the neighbours peering nervously through the hedge at this new addition to my garden...
Wednesday
Perhaps yesterday wasn’t as easy as I’d thought — every muscle in my body aches when I wake up this morning. But there’s no time for a lie-in.
With the ridge in place, it’s time to tackle the roof.
This involves balancing on top of my wobbly old stepladder while I try to fix the rafters into place — thin wooden beams which connect the top of the walls to the ridge in the middle of the roof.

Then it’s a case of laying a waterproof membrane — which looks suspiciously like a bit of old plastic sheeting — over the top. I then fix overlapping lengths of wooden cladding on top of the sheeting to create the finished roof.

By this point it’s mid-afternoon and I’m exhausted, but I really need to get the outside layer of wood — called cladding — onto the basic walls I put up yesterday. If it rains overnight, my inner walls will get wet and this will delay the rest of my building work.
I step up the pace and use all the same techniques on the walls that I did on the roof, affixing beams, the planks of wood.
When I run into difficulties working out which boards go where, I call Mark for advice and — glad of the break from manual labour — we get chatting about the people who are buying the cabins.
He tells me it is those who can’t afford to get on the housing ladder, students who don’t want to waste money on rent, parents wanting extra space for teenagers and older people who have come to the realisation that there are better things to spend their money on than maintaining a large house.
But he adds that the problem many potential clients face is finding somewhere to put their tiny house. After all you can’t just plonk it down in the middle of a roundabout or on the local village green. And if you have to buy a suitable bit of land, then the cost is self-defeating.
‘I’d like to see some land set aside to set up a village of tiny homes,’ says Mark. ‘You often have elderly people living together in mobile homes — why not have younger people doing the same, but in these sort of things?’
Looking at my half-finished mini-house, I’m not sure there would be many takers.
Thursday
Despite my aching arms, countless splinters and chapped hands, I wake up feeling strangely energised.
My mini-house might not be particularly sophisticated, but I have built something with walls and a roof, in which my family could conceivably shelter in a disaster, and feel quite chuffed with myself.
I start fixing the glass in the windows. In my version I am just using basic panes of glass, but if I were to live in it full-time then proper, double-glazed windows would be a must.
I also fit the glass in my front door and hang it from its hinges. It doesn’t shut particularly well — but then again, nor do any of the doors in my real house, all of which have swollen in the rain and are currently driving me mad.
Down one end of the building I also fix the internal joists for what an estate agent might describe as a mezzanine floor.
Friday
I am totally shattered and never want to see a screwdriver again, but feel so close to the finishing line I’ve no choice to continue with my project. I’m also on a bit of a high at what I’ve accomplished, I can’t believe how satisfying this work is (when it goes well).
The inside of my new house looks bare, so I give the MDF on the internal walls a couple of coats of paint and fix some insulation in between the rafters — vital if anyone who sleeps in it isn’t to get hypothermia.
I also tackle the floor, fitting some laminate floorboards which I picked up at a local hardware store. At this point the sage words of Mr Keane came back to bite me.
My poor preparation of the base has resulted in a distinctly lumpy floor, which means the boards won’t clip into one another as easily as the instructions promise.
Like all the best craftsmen, I solve the problem by banging some nails through the boards that keep popping up. They may not be totally smooth, but the pale pine looks chic enough to pass muster with my wife, Charlotte.

I then set about the furnishings. The bed area is easily big enough for a double mattress, below which I position a sink unit. Many of the people Mark supplies his buildings to are keen to live entirely ‘off-grid’ — in other words to be self-sufficient and take nothing from the utility companies.
To do this I would need to install a solar system on the roof to provide electricity and then add water tanks and the like. I don’t have the time — or inclination — to do this, so I just run a cable from my house which I use to power my TV and DVD, a couple of lights, a fan heater and a microwave.
Hurrah! The house that Tom built is finished, and it looks pretty darn good. My chest is now perpetually puffed out with manly pride.
I invite Charlotte and the girls in for a look around, and can’t help but feel chuffed as they coo over how ‘cute’ it is.
But there’s definitely not room for the whole family to sleep here so, despite the girls’ protests, I evict them and settle down for an evening of quiet time. I heat up a chilli con carne in the microwave, pop a Bond film on the box and then head to bed. Outside the wind may be whistling and the rain falling, but my little house is watertight — and surprisingly snug.
Saturday
When I wake, I’m struck by two things. First, because the house is so small it doesn’t take long to warm up when I turn on the heater.
Second, while undoubtedly compact, the cabin holds a surprisingly large amount of my stuff. I could definitely imagine a single person or a couple living comfortably within it.
Is it better than a mobile home or a large caravan? The height of the roof means that it doesn’t feel at all cramped and it certainly looks and feels more permanent and homely.
If it’s to be a permanent home, rather than just temporary accommodation, then the ‘look’ and ‘feel’ of a property is essential — you have to feel affection towards your house. Building it yourself and customising it definitely fosters those emotions.
Or it certainly did in me — I wonder whether Charlotte would mind if I spent just one more night in it... .
