Nigerian Federal Government Reversed Plans To Ban Importation Of Fairly Used(Tokunbo) Cars

EXTRACT FROM SUN NEWS

The Federal Government has reversed its plans to ban the importation of fairly used vehicles also known as Tokunbo, in line with popular opposition to the policy since it was announced late last year. The shift in position was taken at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting penultimate week, following intense debate on the issue with the conclusion that the planned ban was not in the best interest of the nation's economy for now.

The Minister of Industry,Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, disclosed this in Kaduna on Friday, during a facility tour of one of the nation's automobile assembly plants, Peugeot Automobile of Nigeria, Kaduna.

According to him, government has since realised that despite the laudable intention of the policy, the prevailing socio-economic circumstances in the country for now would not be supportive of it.

Stakeholders in the import sector who roundly condemned the plans have been locked in a fierce debate over its desirability or otherwise with the automobile manufacturing industry who saw the policy as long overdue.

But Aganga said despite the new automotive policy in place, the government would not ban the importation of fairly used vehicles because of its socio-economic importance to the country.

Rather than banning, the minister noted that Nigeria must work towards providing alternative cars. Hesaid the idea to ban the imports was aimed at revamping the auto industry adding that a lot more needed to be put in place before adopting such policy because of its apparent backlash.

The minister, who said he was at PAN to assess how the automobile company was taking the opportunity of the new automotive policy of the government, saidthough Tokunbo vehicles would still be imported into the country, government would do everything possible to ensure that affordable and new vehicles are produced for Nigerians.

Theministersaid,"We studied what was done in Pakistan, India and South Africa. It is normal that in most countries they ban the importation of Tokunbo cars because that will help the demand of the local manufacturers.

"However, for Nigeria, we discussed and we said we are not going to ban Tokunbo vehicles because of the socio-economic problems we have in the country. We must work towards providing alternative cars before we even consider placing a ban on them.

Extract from SunNew
"So, in Nigeria we have not banned it yet. If we slow down the demand, it will slow down the pace of growth. If you look at the cars today, for every new car that is imported, almost six Tokunbo vehicles are imported into the country. That tells you that the economy of the country is a priority.

"When you see that, as a country, you cannot afford to place a ban. The Federal Executive Council has said we are not banning Tokunbo vehicles until we have alternative for them. So, Tokunbo cars will still be imported into the country and we will do everything possible to make sure we can produce affordable and new cars for Nigerians. It is important that we provide an environment and the alternative for Nigerians before we embark on banning Tokunbo cars."

Rick Ross Addresses Controversial (Racist) Trayvon Martin Lyric on ‘Mastermind’ Track

"...I'm reminding people that if you're a black person or a person of any color for that matter in this country, you have to be accurate, whatever moves you make, stay accurate."

Rick Ross is gearing up for the release of his “Mastermind” album. On the album, there’s a song called “Black and White”. In the song, Ross refers to Trayvon Martin, in what could easily be perceived in a controversial light. Ross recently released a statement clearing up what is said and why he said it.
“It’s so important that today, on the two-year anniversary of the death of Trayvon Martin, we never forget that tragedy,” Ross says in a quote emailed exclusively to VIBE. “I’m never going to let the world forget that name. In my song ‘Black and White’ off Mastermind I say, ‘Trayvon Martin, I’m never missing my target’. There I’m reminding people that if you’re a black person or a person of any color for that matter in this country, you have to be accurate, whatever moves you make, stay accurate. Even when you’re walking down the street, playing music from your car, you have to stay on point.” (VIBE)
“Black men are being killed and their killers [are] beating the trial. It hasn’t been this much violence against black men since the ’60s. I am Trayvon Martin, we’re all Trayvon Martin. He was from South Florida. That could have been me or one of my homies. So, stay alert and never miss your target. Whatever that target may be. Getting out the hood, providing from your family. Stay sharp. Stay alive. Trayvon, Rest in Peace.” (VIBE)

Nas Comments On Kanye West And Drake’s New Sneaker Deal

Nas recently joined the trend of artist getting in to the corporate world as he launched his own sneaker venture and now he has shared his thoughts on Drake and Kanye West making moves with giant brand like Adidas and Jordan.
According to Nas, when it comes to big artist like a Drake or Kanye it only makes sense to joint major brands.
”That’s what we do. That is what we are all about. If those sneakers come out and kill, it just shows how much hip-hop guys love their shoes. Hip-hop guys should be behind the design of sneakers.” (Complex)
Nas also spoke on the reason for him getting into the sneaker business.
”Everybody was already doing all those other things and those things have those guys’ signatures on them. We can all open sneaker stores, but who is going to care enough to do it? Everybody in the country, outside the country, loves sneakers. For me, it was something I wanted to do a long time ago; even before I met Nick. Nick was already doing his thing in the business, so the timing was just perfect.” (Complex)

Love Reunion, Rihanna and Chris Brown Caught Texting Each Other

Christ Brown who recently completely his anger management rehab has been rumoured and reconnected with his ex girlfriend Rihanna.

“Chris started texting Rihanna on her birthday [February 20], and the two have been sending each other a flurry of texts ever since,” an insider told New York Today.
“Rihanna didn’t write back right away… but later that night she started getting sentimental and texted back, ‘thank you,’ and asked how he was. Since then, the two haven’t stopped texting each other and friends are freaked out that she’s going to start dating him again.”

However, Drake has been occasionally spotted with Rihanna in numerous scenes and both are suspected to be in a relationship.
Chris and Drake have a famously difficult relationship as they were involved in a bar brawl in 2012, said to have been sparked after Drake goaded Chris by saying he was sleeping with Rihanna.
Around a year later, Canadian rapper Drake commented on the incident.

“I don’t want my name to be synonymous with that guy’s name. I really don’t. I wish we could sit down, just like you and me are right now, and talk it out man-to-man. But that’s not going to happen,” he told GQ. “I’m not confrontational, but if someone challenges, I’m not going to back down. “It’s embarrassing, the amount of media coverage… Two rappers fighting over the woman. He’s not even a rapper, but still, it’s the last way you want your name out there. It distracts from the music. But he’s made me the enemy, and that’s the way it’s gonna stay, I guess.”

$22.8bn Fresh Allegation: NNPC Decries Campaign Of Calumny

                          nnpc_886763518
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has decried what it termed as an orchestrated campaign of calumny to tarnish its image by some unscrupulous elements.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by Dr Omar Ibrahim, Acting Group General Manager, NNPC Group Public Affairs Division.
The statement cited the deliberate misrepresentation of the presentation made by the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) before the Rep. Muraina Ajibola-led Joint House Committee probing the Berne Declaration Report.
It stated that the report was an example of the well-orchestrated negative campaign targeted at the corporation.
“Some of the reports had sensational headlines alleging that NEITI had uncovered fresh unremitted $22.8 billion oil revenue by the NNPC.
“However, the body of the story was totally different from the headlines in terms of message and content”, it said.
It said after a careful perusal of the original presentation made by the NEITI Executive Secretary, Hajiya Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, it discovered that the sensational headlines were mere inventions.
According to the statement, this is a calculated attempt to cast aspersion on the image of the corporation and heat up the polity.
“We wish to state that there is nothing farther from the truth. NNPC has a copy of the presentation made by Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, Executive Secretary of NEITI.
“And nowhere did she allege that NNPC failed to remit $22.8 billion to the Federation Account.
“We are convinced that there is a conspiracy by some groups or individuals to drag down the name of the corporation by whatever means possible”, It said.
It said that despite the obvious negative campaign against the corporation, the management of the NNPC under the leadership of Engr. Andrew Yakubu remains undaunted and determined to achieve its mandate.

Defence Headquarters Begins ‘Specialized Campaign’ Against Boko Haram In N/East

            DHQ
The Defence Headquarters on Thursday said that the military has launched a “Specialised Campaign” to combat insurgents in the northeastern part of the country.
The campaign is being carried out simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states – three states which are under state of emergency to curb the Boko Haram insurgency – to apprehend the terrorists and ensure that they do not escape out of Nigeria.
Also, the Defence Headquarters confirmed that troops killed six Boko Haram fighters and captured two others after attacking Michika in Adamawa State on Wednesday.
One soldier and three civilians died in the encounter with the sect’s fighters.
Defence Headquarters (DHQ) spokesperson, Maj.-Gen. Chris Olukolade spoke in Abuja.
Gen. Olukolade said: “The purpose of this briefing is to intimate you with the elevation of counter-terrorism campaign in the country.
“The new approach marks another phase in the operations designed to further contain the terrorists and their activities.
“The specialised campaign, which has commenced, is being undertaken simultaneously in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states. This operation is also in furtherance of efforts at apprehending the terrorists and ensuring they do not escape out of Nigeria as they are now so desperate to do”.
On the recent massacre of scores of students of the Federal Government College Buni-Yadi, Gujba LGA of Yobe State, Olukolade said, “The Defence Headquarters acknowledges with grave concern the recent mindless killing of innocent school children and other citizens in towns and villages following terrorist activities in some parts of the Northeast.
“The dastardly act has expectedly attracted the reaction of well-meaning individuals who have been condemning the senseless bloodletting.
“Disturbing as this trend proves, the fact remains that the chilling episodes are simply typical of terrorists’ intention to intimidate the people into subscribing to their false claim to invincibility.
“This distressing situation notwithstanding, it must be pointed out that the current activities of the terrorist groups are actually at best a reaction to the renewed offensive against the terror outfit whose operatives had infiltrated the country to support their hitherto depleted membership and counterparts in their daring acts to reinvent relevance by embarking on renewed attacks on soft targets”.
He also gave an insight into the sect’s attack on Michika on Wednesday night.
He said: “Unfortunately, however, they have in the course of their flight towards various borders, continued to perpetrate mayhem as noticed in some parts of Adamawa State yesterday night where they attacked communities.
“In desperation for money and food, they looted and burnt banks, shops and filling stations along their way through Michika as they headed for Cameroon border.
“Six of their fighters were killed, two captured while nine of their vehicles were destroyed. One soldier and three civilians also died in the encounter.
“It is believed that those involved in this latest attacks are the elements that perpetrated the mayhem against students of Federal Government College, Buni Yadi, Yobe State and other places.
“They have been holed up and are still engaged in suicidal fighting, apparently with a view to attaining martyrdom status, as troops close in on the die-hard ones among them”.
The Defence spokesperson pleaded with Nigerians in insurgency prone areas to report suspicious movements to security agencies.
He said: “Citizens in these states, particularly towards border areas, are requested to assist the security forces by reporting any movement of the group, if noticed in their locality, as it would further enhance the operations as well as assist in apprehending or eliminating them. All things being equal, the activities of this murderous group will be further degraded towards total elimination shortly.
“Citizens are enjoined to show understanding of the situation and continue to cooperate with the security forces, especially with vital and timely information on the movements of these terrorists to enable quick response accordingly”.

Boko Haram: 300,000 Displaced In Northeast Nigeria

                Adamawa-boko
Nearly 300,000 people, more than half of them children, have fled their homes in northeast Nigeria since May last year because of violence linked to radical Islamist group Boko Haram, the United Nations said on Thursday.
Three states in the region have been under emergency rule since last May 14, when the military launched a massive offensive to stamp out the insurgency, which has killed thousands since 2009.
Credible figures, including for casualties, have been difficult to obtain, as waves of attacks across a swathe of remote territory have made it impossible for most rescue agencies to operate.
But the UN’s humanitarian office, OCHA, said a total of 290,002 people have been internally displaced in the three states under emergency rule — Adamawa, Borno and Yobe — as of January 1, 2014.
The OCHA said the aggregated figures were “verified and conservative estimates” based on reports from humanitarian, development and relief agencies working in Nigeria.
The population in Borno — the epicentre of the conflict and where Boko Haram was founded more than a decade ago — has been the hardest-hit, with 189,318 displaced.
In Yobe, the figure was 71,491, and in Adamawa, 29,193.
Citing figures provided by Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency, the UN said 51 percent of those displaced were children.
The OCHA said that providing assistance to those affected has been a challenge because of the continuing unrest.
The UN has not collated figures for those displaced in 2014 but the violence has continued unabated.
But the International Red Cross said on February 6 that from August last year to the end of January, it had helped provide more than 18,000 people in Borno with shelter and essentials, including food.
More than 300 people have been killed already this year, including 43 students who were slaughtered while they slept at a secondary school in Yobe on Tuesday.
In Adamawa late on Wednesday, hundreds of suspected militant fighters besieged a town, destroying homes and businesses with heavy weaponry and explosives

Governor Fashola renames hall to honour slain Yobe students

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola yesterday Thursday February 27th renamed a hall initially named after him, to “Peace Hall’’, in memory of slain Yobe school children.

Vanguard reports that the hall was constructed by the Lagos Zonal Council of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), located at Fadeyi in Lagos.

Fashola said at the inauguration of the hall earlier named after him by NUPENG that he changed the name to honour the slain secondary school students.
"I appreciate NUPENG’s gesture but I will rename this edifice `Peace Hall`, in memory of the lives of the children that were brutally slain in Yobe by insurgents. The Children will soon be forgotten but as a reminder to us and the need to stand up for what is right, I ask that the hall be re-named as NUPENG’s Peace Hall, as we all search for peace across Nigeria. While we pray for the repose of the souls of these young ones, it is also a moment we must stand up as a nation. Whatever language you speak, whatever faith you practise, whatever ethnic/tribe you claim, this is the time it will not show. No matter how diverse we are, we are still one people, this is a time when colours and flag do not matter and political ideologies mean nothing. This is the time we must show and respect the values of the lives of fellow Nigerians’’ The governor said.

Maheeda says her going unclad will not make God love her less

urlMaheeda, whose real name is Caroline Sam, says her going unclad as a born again christian would never make God love her less. She says His Grace is sufficient for her. Currently promoting her music, Maheeda in an interview with Encomium said she doesn’t have any problems exposing herself

“I dont have a problem doing what I do but I think its because of my job and I know most Christians would not understand. But I just believe that this is what I have to do to get attention especially when it comes to my job and I just believe His grace is enough for me. He loves me more than my indecency. If you see God as a father and he sees you as a daughter, He would not because of your indecency want to ruin you or kill you. That is how I see God. He understands me. He hates me but he loves me at the same time”.
Asked what happened to her once-upon-a-time gospel artiste status, the raunchy artiste replied
“I think what happened was just spiritual maturity. At a stage in your life, you have to take a break and grow up or else everything would just be wrong. I needed to grow spiritually. Christians call it Born-again. I am standing in the gap for Christians and Muslims”.
Maheeda said she has always loved music but was thirsty for stardom since childhood. She said she hasn’t been reaping the fruits from her musical album but has been getting contracts for guest appearances. She claims she was recently abroad to attend the birthday party of a bigshot and was paid 3000 dollars just for coming and not singing.

A Nigerian father has been arrested after he allegedly padlocked his son's mouth shut to stop him screaming while he battered him to death.
Chris Elvis, 30, allegedly accused four-year-old Godrich of being an 'Ogbanje' or 'child of evil' and blamed him for his bad luck in recent days.
The security guard beat his son, burned him all over his body with a hot iron and then locked him in a plastic drum, according to court documents.
The child's mother called police after returning from the market to find her son's horrific death.
Elvis tried to act mentally ill when he was arrested, but the authorities said his condition was normal, according to International Business Times.

Coke reveals its secret: It may need to carry a cancer warning

An extract from World Observe Online

Nightmares about the backlash they suffered the last time they dared to change the secret recipe for their drink still most likely haunt Coca-Cola executives.
But 27 years after the ill-fated launch of New Coke, the threat of having a cancer warning placed on their famous red bottles is forcing them to revise the closely guarded ingredients again.
With its arch rival Pepsi, Coca-Cola is altering its drink in the US after the state of California declared one of its flavourings a carcinogen – though it will continue to sell the old form of the drink in Britain and the rest of Europe, with no cautionary labelling.
The two drinks have been made to include less of the chemical 4-methylimidazole, a caramel flavouring known as 4-MEI, which the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences in the US has linked it to cancer in mice and leukaemia in rats. It can be formed during the process of cooking certain ingredients and consequently may be found in minor amounts in many foods. Under Californian law, drinks containing a certain level of carcinogens must have a cancer-warning label on their packaging.
But the two companies – which, combined, make up 90 per cent of the soft-drink market in the US – insist the ingredient is not a health risk.
Coca-Cola said yesterday the cancer warning is: “scientifically unfounded”, while also maintaining that the company has been able to make the changes through a “manufacturing process modification” rather than a full change of formula.
“The caramel colour in all of our products has been, is and always will be safe,” a spokesperson said.
“The changes will not affect the colour or taste of Coca-Cola. Over the years, we have updated our manufacturing processes from time to time, but never altered our secret formula. Caramel is a perfectly safe ingredient and this has been recognised by all European food-safety authorities.
“The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reaffirmed the safety of caramel colouring as recently as March 2011 and stated that the presence of 4-MEI in caramel colouring is not a health concern. In fact, 4-MEI is found in many foods including baked goods, coffee, bread, molasses, soy sauce, gravies and some beers.”
The American Beverage Association, the drinks industry’s trade body in the US, also said that there is no evidence that the ingredient poses a risk to humans. And the US Food and Drug Administration said someone would have to drink 1,000 cans of Pepsi or Coke per day to ingest the same dosage of the chemical given to the laboratory mice.
The secret recipe: ‘Merchandise 7X’
Is a great deal of self-propagated myth surrounding the Coca-Cola recipe and its “Merchandise 7X” combination of flavourings, which is apparently privy to just two executives who are not allowed to fly in the same plane in case the secret goes down with them. Last year an American radio presenter tracked down a 1979 article in an Atlanta newspaper which revealed nutmeg, neroli and even coriander were ingredients.
The original recipe from 1886 has been changed several times. Cocaine was replaced by caffeine in 1904. But the most controversial change was in 1985, when the company introduced New Coke with a sweeter taste. The product bombed, lasting just three months before the original was reinstated

Emeka Ike is broke to pay house rent

Emeka Ike was thrown out of his rented
apartment recently for his inability to pay his
house rent of about 8.5million naira. The
house is located at No 1, Raji Oladimeji
Street, Magodo GRA, Lagos state. Before the
ejection, Emeka used this building to run his
school, St Nicholas College, which he
founded in 2007.He agreed with the Landlord,
Chief Samuel Agboola Akintan that he would
run the school in the building for a period of
5years at the sum of 13million naira of which
he would pay 2million annually for two years
and three million annually for three years.
Now Emeka Ike deposited 2million then and
did not pay for the following year. He then
paid 4.5million three years later. So when the
landlord started getting agitated, Emeka then
gave him a bounce check of 1.5million naira.
In an attempt for the landlord to get his
money from him took the case to the court.
According to the landlord, Emeka refused two
appear in court and so the case was judged
against him. He said Emeka was given a
court order to leave the premises December
30th last year, but he has refused to leave
and that’s why his property was thrown out
January 24th.
On hearing that his property has been thrown
out, the actor went straight to the Police
station to report that thugs have invaded his
premises. So the Police went to arrest the
two guards the Land lord placed to watch
over the building.
The landlord went further to say that, he
tendered documents to the Police before the
guards were relaesed, and that the DPO was
shocked to realize that Emeka had lied to
them.
He said he was 87years old and has being
struggling with diabetes for the past 37years.
He claimed he never knew Emeka before
now, that it was his children who came
saying that they knew Emeka on television
and he was a good man, and so went ahead
to sign the 5year contract with him.
He also said that the teachers in Emeka’s
school said he has not paid their salary for
close to 9months, and he wonders what kind
of human being Emeka was.
Now when Emeka Ike was questioned about
the happening, he said the landlord was
merely looking for an opportunity to become
popular, and says he wants to handle the
issue legally. Emeka said he was just
experiencing some challenges in running the
school and that’s all, and that it is only the
Government or himself that can close his
school, no one else.
He also claimed to be running a business in
Abuja that is presently making success, and
so he does not want any distractions at all.
As for me, I think the guy had difficulty
managing the school, if not he would have
paid his teachers.
I just feel bad that they both do not have
patience for each other and let the whole
issue go this way. If you ask me, I tell you
that even the business he says he’s doing in
Abuja, am not even sure of how successful is
it. They should calm down and resolve the
issue, times are just hard for them.

Fashola Meets With Lagos Delegates To National Conference

Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State on Monday in Ikeja met with delegates from the state to the forthcoming National Conference on the agenda of the state for the conference.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the six delegates include a former Federal Commissioner for Works and Housing, Alhaji Femi Okunnu and a former Attorney-General of Lagos State, Mr Supo Shasore.
Others are Mr Rabiu Oluwa, Mr Waheed Ayeni, Prof. Tunde Samuel and
Mrs Funmilayo Bashorun.
Fashola said at the meeting that the state would present its position on issues affecting it and the country strongly at the conference, with a view to getting solutions to them.
He said that a review of the revenue sharing formula, creation of state police and special status for Lagos State, if considered, would impact positively on the state and also promote national development.
Fashola expressed belief in the ability of the delegates to deliver, as they were accomplished Nigerians who had, over the years, contributed immensely to the country`s development.
“I am confident they would do their best with their knowledge and disposition, I doubt if we can have a better set of people than this”, he said.
Speaking on behalf of the delegates, Okunnu, thanked the state government for finding them worthy to present the state`s position at the conference.
He promised that the delegates would do their best to justify the confidence reposed in them.
Okunnu said the position of the state on various issues were not too different from those presented at the national conference held during the tenure of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
He said that the state would also push for independent candidacy in elections, true federalism and a just revenue allocation formula.
According to him, the team will interact with delegates from other states in the South-West geopolitical zone, to forge a common position at the conference which begins in March. (NAN)

Smart toothbrush gives you a mouthful online

Barcelona - The world's first smart toothbrush was unveiled on Monday, allowing you to improve your dental hygiene while sharing the results online with your dentist or to impress your friends.
Dental cleaning sessions last two minutes, divided into four 30-second segments, one for each corner of your mouth.
Shown off on the opening day of the four-day World Mobile Congress in Barcelona, Spain, the brush is connected by Bluetooth wireless technology to your smartphone, and thus to the network.
"It is a world first," said Michael Cohen-Dumani, head of Procter & Gamble's Oral-B brand, which plans to sell the product in Europe, the United States and Asia from June.
Sold for €219, the brush relays your toothbrushing activity to an application on the smartphone, recording whether you respect the two-minute rule and whether you brush hard, but not too hard.
If the results are satisfactory, a message appears on your smartphone: "Congratulations: your teeth are shining."
It also lets you share the information on social networks or directly with your dentist.
"Today we can see the smartphone's potential to change people's habits," Cohen-Dumani told AFP.
"It is really that trend towards the 'quantified self'", the desire to record everything, to follow your sports activities, the calories you consume or what you spend, thanks to new technologies.
The world's largest mobile fair is a showcase for that trend, with smartphone markers unveiling an array of smart watches and bracelets that can count your steps or track your heart rate, and even Wi-Fi connected scales to keep an eye on your weight.
Larger objects, too, are getting hooked up to the network, from cars and fridges to a shop dressing room that lets you ask for new sizes and colours to try on without leaving the cabin.
